What is Iyengar Yoga?

Iyengar YOGA is named after its founder BKS Iyengar, (1918 – 2014). Born in India, BKS Iyengar was key in spreading Yoga Europe , USA and the rest of the world.

Iyengar yoga is a form of hatha yoga.

It places strong emphasis on correct use of muscles, bones and joints to achieve correct posture and proper alignment of the body.

This develops awareness and intelligence in the body producing a chemical reaction in the body that releases tension and stress in the mind and body.

After an Iyengar yoga session, you will feel yourself standing straighter, feeling stretched and relaxed!

B.K.S. Iyengar

Born in Southern India in 1918, he suffered from many illnesses such as malaria, tuberculosis and typhoid but he soon found that by doing yoga, his health vastly improved. Through his own practice, he developed a form of yoga practice where his teachings are now incorporated into many other forms of yoga, exercise and therapy.

Yoga became popular in Europe, Canada and The United States mainly through the teachings of B.K.S Iyengar. His method is now the most widely practised by millions of practitioners throughout the world.

B.K.S Iyengar introduced props into the modern practice of yoga to allow all yoga practitioners to get maximum results from their practice. The use of props encourage students, bolster confidence, and create optimal body alignment, helping those who are inflexible or weak.

In 2004, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. This year, he is one of the nominees for The Greatest Indian since Mahatma Gandhi, chosen for having qualities of being most influential, iconic, and inspirational. His contribution to the ancient art of yoga is truly remarkable.

Iyengar Yoga is a form of Hatha Yoga that known for its use of props, such as belts and blocks, as aids in performing asanas (postures). It is firmly based on the traditional eight limbs of emphasizing the development of strength, stamina, flexibility and balance, as well as concentration and meditation. Through the practice of a system of asanas, it aims to unite the body, mind and spirit for health and well-being. This discipline is considered a powerful tool to relieve the stresses of modern-day life which in turn can help promote total physical and spiritual well-being. There are three unique aspects of Iyengar yoga, namely, technicalities, sequencing and timing.


Are the precise and often subtle technical points given to explore the asana fully. Detailed instructions are given to the student to give the student access to the body beyond the outer, skeletal and muscular body into the subtleties of our inner glorious mind.


Refers to the order is which we the asanas are practiced, in which there is a powerful cumulative effect achieved by practicing asanas in particular sequences. Because each type of asanas has different effects on the mind, proper sequencing prepares and cultures the mind, to make it conducive to your yoga practice.
